Capsule Wardrobe Spring/Summer ‘19

Hey ya’ll! So I finally got around to writing about one of my favorite fun topics: fashion!

First off, I don’t think I’ll be a fashion blogger anytime soon. This might be a twice a year topic. It’s so much work photographing clothes and accessories. I would definitely need an assistant and Aaron & Aidan aren’t volunteering! Haha Secondly, what you should know about me is I’m certainly not what you would call a fashionista. If you’re into trends you’ll find this BORING! I don’t change my wardrobe much from season to season regardless of trends.

What I do like to do is invest in staples. Then I just add in a few heavier pieces or take some layers away depending on the season. I’ve done this for the past 5-6 years and it works really well.

My fashion formula is broken down as this.
Each season I invest in:
1) One pair of quality shoes, boots or sandals. My favorite places to buy shoes or sandals are: Browns, Little Burgandy, SoftMoc and lately Naturalizer has upped their espadrille game!
2) One new jacket or coat; this Spring it happened to be a yellow rain coat from Country Liberty - go figure!
3) One new purse (ok - this Spring I did splurge and bought a couple extras at Zara - more on that later);
Other than that I really don’t buy many season specific items. For example, the weeks we actually have Spring weather in Nova Scotia seems
to be dwindling. It snowed last week in some places! Even on sunny days it’s still going down to single digits (frost last night, my poor plants!). But today its +22 and we'll take it!  I will also buy a couple of $20 dresses at H&M, Joe Fresh, Old Navy or Target which will carry me through the summer months and that’s pretty much it.

The core pieces of my Spring/Summer ‘19 wardrobe are:
1. Comfortable Jumpsuits- I own one navy, one black and one grey;
2. Dark brown purse & sandals;
3. Mustard Yellow - tops/dress - pairs nicely with brown;
4. Tshirts in striped/solid white;
5. White sneakers;
6. Woven purses;
7. 1 pair of cropped jeans & 1 pair of skinny - I am so cheap when it comes to jeans - Reitmans and Joe Fresh are my faves;
8. Blazer;
9. Off the shoulder top;
10. Basic black dress;
11. Denim shirt or jacket;
12. Rain coat.
13. Floral sun dress.

I then add in a few other basics - couple of camisoles for layering, belts (one in black and one in brown) - Gucci knock offs anyone? The Rambling Red Head would be proud!; cardigans in cream/grey and basic black leggings. With these 25 or so pieces I could easily make an endless amount of outfits. Again, many of these items are recurring from season to season so more than half of these items I’ve had forever!

Jewelry

While my wardrobe consist of staples with not a lot of color or pattern, I really like to add personality to my outfits by finding unique jewelry pieces. Unique doesn’t have to mean expensive either. I found the cutest gold bracelet at Value Village a few weeks ago and it will look great when I break out the sunless tanner!  And these white fringe earrings are from Value Village! Key pieces I’ve spent a little more on: emerald earrings from Earth Goddess, brown beaded Stella & Dot necklace and my quartz crystal necklace which was a gift from my brother will make an appearance season after season & seem to always match whatever I’m wearing. I also have 3 MK watches that I fluctuate - brown leather strap, gold and gold and white - all of which I’ve had for years now - two were gifts and one I bought on a trip to Maine.

Purses/Shoes
I love Michael Kors purses. The ones I’ve bought have served me well!! I don’t feel bad about spending a little extra on my bags when I round out most of my wardrobe from bargain stores. In my opinion, the right bag can really make the most basic outfit come to life.  And I mentioned above some of my favorite shoes stores. Ahead of Hair in Pictou also carries Clarks sandals - the blush wedges in the pic below are from there a couple of seasons ago and look brand new!

Sunglasses
I also love sunglasses. I bought this pair of $59 Le Specs after seeing them worn by Meghan Markle this Spring before they sold out. They are back in stock and amazing quality for the price!

So that’s really it for my capsule collection. When I was putting this together I realized I don’t need to shop any time soon, though I definitely want this pair of black wedge Birkenstock’s

and this MK belt bag is still calling my name. I really do need a pair of black sandals and I think a fanny pack would be perfect for the summer events I attend!

I hope this gave you some inspiration to look at your closet and to think about what you need to put together some easy mix and match outfits. Now, I'm off to enjoy this beautiful day and finish setting up my deck!

Happy Spring!
