Family roots

I realize I haven’t blogged in a while. We’ve been chipping away at our spring to do lists at the house (We’ve completed everything on our to do list with the exception of a couple items!), and my Instagram account is full of posts & pictures if you’re curious!  It’s not been easy as the weather hasn’t been the most cooperative. It’s hard when you only have one day of sunshine followed by 4 of rain! I know you all hear me on that!

I’m now making a point to sit & write - thank you for those who have been looking for a new post!! I’m so happy you look forward to them.

I’ve been helping a few friends who are in the midst of doing home updates - we’ve been texting and messaging -mostly talking paint colors and flooring options. And my mom is in the midst of picking out new countertops, backsplash and a kitchen sink. So between all of that I’ve been getting my fill of inspiration for the blog!💕

But instead of blogging about home today, I thought I’d take a minute and write about family, because family and home are intertwined, aren’t they? Last night my cousin Melissa texted me and asked me a question about my grandfather, Dr. G. Norman MacLeod. (She lives on a farm and some of her relatives were chatting about Pictou County veterinarians). And as it goes sometimes, that discussion with her started me on a little bit of a google train. Admittedly, I haven’t really delved into genealogy before- and as I may have mentioned in the past, I don’t know a lot about my fathers/grandfathers family as my grandfather died at a young age. Last night when texting with Melissa I actually found his obituary online and then logged onto ancestry.ca to see if I could find out a little more.

My grandmother Alice didn’t talk a lot about my grandfather or his family - as I said before I think it made her too sad because he passed away while she was expecting Dad, leaving her a young widow. I touched on this in a past blog post.

My great grandfather, Dr. Hiram MacLeod was also a veterinarian. I found this family photo online, the littlest boy is my grandfather and the very distinguished man on the far left is my great-grandfather:

Mom also has the original photo in Nanny MacLeod’s hopechest. If you’d like to you can read my grandfathers obituary here. It does bring a tear to my eye each time I read it, to wonder what might have been:

I would also like to learn more about my grandmother Alice MacDonald. As a young girl she attended a private school in Halifax. I only knew her as Nanny MacLeod: she liked her card parties & her cat!! But what a life she must have lived as a young woman from a prominent family. Her roots originated with her family arriving on the Ship Hector, and her old family home was actually lived in by a sea captain at one point.  I want to learn as much as I can to pass along to Aidan about my history: the MacLeods, Miller’s, MacPhees and the Tingley’s.

Have you looked into your family’s history? It really is fascinating to me. Must be a part of getting older.
